Another long weekend awaits residents in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and some parts of Mindanao.
December 19, 2016, Monday, is a special holiday in the ARMM region, Cotabato City and other parts of Mindanao to commemorate Shariff Kabunsuan Day. Shariff Mohammad Kabunsuan is a native from Johore re-settled in Mindanao in the 14th century, where he preached Islam especially to the native tribes around the region.
In Cotabato City and in Maguindanao, Muslims celebrate Shariff Kabunsuan Festival with several activities from December 15 up to 19, among them the river landing reenactment, an Inaul fashion presentation, musical and athletics events.
Shariff Kabunsuan is declared a special non-working holiday in the entire area of the defunct Region 12, based on the Batas Pampook Bilang 14 enacted on September 24, 1981. The former region includes the cities of Cotabato, Iligan, Tacurong, and Kidapawan, and provinces of Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, and North Cotabato.
