A strong earthquake strikes off Surigao Province anew on Sunday, March 5.
According to the PHIVOLCS, an earthquake jolted Surigao City with a magnitude 5.9 (initially reported to be of 5.4 magnitude) at 8:08 AM on Sunday. The state seismologists said that the new quake is of techtonic origin and was an aftershock of the recent massive 6.7 quake that hit off the region last February 10.
Intensity VI was felt in Surigao City, Intensity IV in Limasawa and San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, Intensity III in San Juan and San Francisco, Southern Leyte, and Intensity II in General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
Aftershocks are expected, said Phivolcs in its earthquake bulletin.
To allow school administrators to assess the conditions of the school buildings, Surigao del Norte Governor Sol F. Matugas has suspended the classes in both public and private schools in all level on March 6 in the following areas:
- Surigao City
- San Francisco
