Magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook Sarangani and parts of Mindanao


A strong earthquake with magnitude 7.2 shook Sarangani and parts of Mindanao at 4:23 early morning on Saturday, April 29. Aftershocks and damages are expected following the huge quake.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the temblor has a depth of 57kms with its epicenter located south of General Santos City.

The quake was felt in large part of Mindanao particularly in the central and southern regions.

Intensity V was felt in General Santos City, Koronadal City, Santa Maria, Jose Abad Santos, Don Marcelino, Balot Island, Davao Occidental, Polomolok, Tupi, South Cotabato, Alabel, Malapatan, Glan, Sarangani, and Palimbag, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity IV was felt in Davao City, Cotabato City, Zamboanga City while Intensity III in Cagayan De Oro City. Kidapawan City was shaken with Intensity II.

Intrumental intensities were also felt in the following areas:  Intensity V inGeneral Santos City, Intensity IV in Zamboanga City and Intensity III in Cotabato City.

The state seismologists warned of possible tsunami especially in the coastal regions, but retracted the alert thereafter.
