President Rodrigo Duterte fired Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo Teo amid controversy of her agency’s multi-million ad deal with her brothers.
The Commission on Audit (COA) reported of the questionable ad deal amounting to Php 60M between the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Bitag Media Unlimited Inc, (BUMI), owned by his brother Ben Tulfo, to air the agency’s advertisements.
Teo said she was not privy of the advertisement placement in her brother’s program. According to her, the ad deal went to a bidding process and was reviewed by the department’s legal unit.
She blamed her detractors for this fiasco and added that she had been receiving death threats after the controversial closure of Boracay.
Amid calls for her resignation, the tourism chief affirmed that she is not resigning because the president still has full trust in him.
Yesterday, BUMI agreed to return the P60 million to the government after a “family meeting”, which was perceived by many as ‘admission of guilt’.
In a recent development of this case, Pres. Duterte has allegedly fired Teo following a cabinet meeting last night. According to reports, Duterte asked Teo to tender her resignation after their one-on-one talk.
