A strong earthquake may hit Davao City and nearby provinces, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The earthquake could possibly be a strong one and may reach magnitude 7 or more, says Phivolcs, due to a recently discovered fault in Mati City, Davao Oriental and other parts of Compostela Valley Province, which is called the “Surigao-Mati” fault-line that stretches 320-kilometers.
Phivolcs warns residents of a possible destructive earthquake that may hit Monkayo, including Davao City. The destruction could be massive because most of the buildings and structures in Davao City are on a “soft ground”.
A strong earthquake with magnitude 6.5 had already hit Mati City in September last year. No severe damages were recorded, however. Davao City has also felt the jolts when a strong quake shook Surigao City last February 10.
