Think Before You Click: A student was arrested in Gen San due to malicious post

Anti Cybercrime Law in the Philippines

A 20-year old student was arrested in her house at Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City last Friday due to a malicious comment in Facebook against a teenager.

The arrest came after a certain Ellen Jane Amado posted a comment on her social media maligning a 16-year old she had a fight with, according to the anti-cybercrime group of Region 12.

Although the victim’s name was edited out from the original post, it was already late because people especially her friends and families have already read the malicious post.

“Kasi in-edit niya, tinanggal niya yung pangalan. So, nakita ngayon iyun ng mga relatives, kaibigan nung complainant iyung post na ito, kaya nagpunta sila dito sa office at nag-file ng complaint,” said Dofiles.

(Because she edited it, she removed the victim’s name.  So, the complainant’s relatives and friends have read the post, and went to this office to file a complaint.)

Amado is currently under the custody of the anti-cybercrime group in Region 12.  She was charged with online libel under Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The suspect’s case should serve a lesson to everyone to be a responsible social media user, said the anti-cybercrime group.

Bottomline: THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK. Be a responsible online and social media user.
