Duterte has suspended both classes and work in government offices on May 14
The Malacañang Palace has declared May 14, 2018, as special non-working holiday due to barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
Proclamation No. 479 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday declaring Monday as a special non-working day to allow voters to take part in the barangay and SK election, according to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
Candidates will vie for the positions of barangay chairperson, seven members of the Sangguniang Barangay, SK chairperson and seven SK members in each of some 42,000 barangays nationwide.
No more postponement this year
The barangay and SK election was originally scheduled on October 2016. However, due to the fear that local officials would use drug money to influence the polls, it was moved to October 2017. Upon deliberation in the Congress, the lower house moved the elections to May this year.
Efforts to postpone the polls for the third time for October 2018 was barred by the Senate after the body did not pass a counterpart measure to complement the House of Representatives’ passage of the bill resetting the barangay elections.
