Manila – A video of Gretchen Barretto laughing at a letter sender asking for help for her family has gone viral in social media.
Veteran actress Gretchen Barretto and her friends drew flak after a video of them laughing at a letter sender circulated online. The video was grabbed from the actress’ Instagram Live on June 6, where she and her friends choose a letter sender wishing for help, and granting it in return. Her wish-granting program started since April 1.
The video, shared by Harvey Canencia Balicog, show Barretto and her two friends supposedly making fun of a letter sender asking for help for her child diagnosed with a heart problem and her brother who is about to undergo chemotherapy for a duodenal (part of the small intestine) mass and a chest lymphoma. Adding to her request was a can of milk for her mother in-law. This has caused a rowdy laughter from the group.
“My eldest was diagnosed with ‘butas sa puso’.I’m also sending this request in behalf of my brother who has duodenal mass and chest lymphoma. But since it’s [a] Mother’s Day ang request ko po sana Ensure Milk for my mother-in-law who is 73 years old. Mag-isa na lang,” a portion of the letter reads.
Based on the video, the group was supposedly laughing at the confusing request; from a child, the letter sender quickly changed her request for her brother, but ended up requesting for a can of Ensure (milk brand) for her mother-in-law. Some netizens also deduced that the three were laughing at the grammar mistakes of the sender.
The actress even posted their reactions on her Instagram account and captioned it with “No caption needed.” The post has been deleted after it earned negative criticisms. Barretto also went on a “private” mode after netizens flocked and attacked her on her Instagram.
Popular social media pages picked up the video. The infamous video, which was posted on June 7, goes viral on Facebook and other social media sites. It earned more than 4,000 shares and 3 million views in less than 48 hours.
In another part of the live video, Barretto apologized for their reaction. “I’m sorry… We’re not supposed to be doing that, but I can’t help it,” said the actress. One of her friends also apologized for laughing at the letter. “Sorry. It’s so funny kasi ang haba ng explanation, but the request is Ensure for someone else,” said her friend.
In the end, the group granted the sender’s request. In spite of, netizens were enraged at Barretto’s reaction to the letter. Many referred to it as “inappropriate” and “insensitive.”
