An on court scuffle involving players interrupts the Gilas Pilipinas vs Australia 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers match on Monday, July 2, at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Sometime at the 4:00 mark of the 3rd quarter and Australia wide lead of 79-48, a fist fight between players escalated after Philippine’s RR Pogoy’s elbow landed across the face of one of the Australian players.
As per FIBA rules, those who will be found out involved in the rumble, including those who will pacify the fight will be ejected from the game. After thorough review from the referees and officials, nine (9) players from the Gilas and four (4) from Australia were kicked out of the game.
The following players have been ejected from the Philippines vs Australia game:
- Australia: Nathan Sobey, Chris Goulding, Thon Maker, and Daniel Kickert
- Philippines: Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Andre Blatche, RR Pogoy, Troy Rosario, JapethAguilar, and Matthew Wright
Only three players remain in Philippines’ side namely, Gabe Norwood, Junemar Fajardo and Amer Baser will complete the game versus Australia. Expectedly, with the unusual set of players of 5 against 3, the game ended with a disappointing and embarrassing loss for Gilas Pilipinas. With only Baser in the floor for Gilas, Australia wins by default, 89-53, after Norwood and Fajardo were also fouled out of the game in the remaining quarter.
