The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday, July 3, said that a magnitude 5.5 (later downgraded to 5.2) strikes off Batangas, parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The temblor was tectonic in origin and has a depth of 123 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 54 kilometers west of Nasugbu, Batangas, according to the state seismologists.
Tremors were felt in nearby towns and provinces, including Metro Manila. Phivolcs has recorded Intensity 4 n Lubang and Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro. Intensity 3 was felt in the towns of Buco, Talisay, Tumaway and Calatagan in Batangas; parts of Metro Manila (Quezon City and Mandaluyong City); Clark, Pamapanga; Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro; in Looc and Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro; and in Tanza and Maragondon in Cavite. Meanwhile, Parañaque and Manila, as well as Plaridel and Malolos in Bulacan felt Intensity 2 shaking.
Phivolcs also recorded instrumental intensity 3 in Malolos, Bulacan; Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City; and Cavite City; and intensity 2 in Marikina City; Navotas City; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; and Talisay, Batangas.
Instrumental Intensity 1 was recorded in Las Pinas City; Pasig City; Quezon City; Bacoor, Cavite; Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija; and Guagua, Pampanga. Instrumental intensities are not necessarily felt by residents, according to Phivolcs.
Damages from the quake are not expected, however, aftershocks may occur, said Phivolcs.
