DepEd guidelines on automatic class suspensions during typhoons and other calamities

Manila, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) reiterates the policies and guidelines on automatic class suspension in cases of typhoons and storm signals.

The following are the updated DepEd guidelines for automatic class suspension or cancelation whenever a storm signal is hoisted in the area.

Storm Signal No. 1 – automatic class suspension in pre-school and kindergarten, both public and private

Storm Signal No. 2 – automatic class cancellation in pre-school to senior high school, both public and private

Storm Signal No. 3 – automatic class cancellation in all levels, both public and private

Storm signals declared by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) between 10:00 PM and 4:30 AM reflect the whole day suspension of classes in respective levels based on the automatic class suspension guidelines.

Meanwhile, storm signal warnings hoisted by 11:00 AM automatically suspend the same day’s afternoon classes.

However, in the absence of storm signal warnings, DepEd said that local government units (LGUs) have the authority to declare local suspensions. Officials are expected to announce whole day class cancellations not later than 4:30 AM or half-day class suspension not later than 11:00 AM.

DepEd also give the discretion on parents to determine whether their children should go to school during typhoons, floods and other calamities in the absence of announcements.
