Know the features of the modern jeepney in the Philippines.
Manila, Philippines – Despite protests, the DOTr continues with its Public Utility Vehicles Modernization Program which aims to modernize daily commuting and offer convenience and safety ride to passengers.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will roll out the first batch of modern public utility vehicles (PUVs) to operators on Friday, July 12.
During the program inauguration today held at the Quirino Grandstand in Ermita, Manila, the transportation department said that over a hundred modern transport vehicles under the PUV Modernization Program are ready to be dispatched.
DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport Tim Orbos, Assistant Secretary Mark de Leon, and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Martin Delgra III graced the event.
These modern jeepneys are also open for public viewing today from 9 AM to 11 AM.
What are the special features of the modern PUV’s?
The modern jeepneys, as it name implies, will have ‘high-tech’ features that will ensure convenience and safety of the Filipino commuters, including persons with disabilities, pregnant women and other passengers who need special assistance.
The Public Utility Modernization (PUV) Program mandates the installation of speed limit devices in the new modern jeepney. This would ensure the compliance of PUV drivers to corresponding speed limits of their routes.
Dashboard Cameras or Dashcam and CCTVs
Dashcams are a must-install in every vehicle nowadays. Captured scenes from the camera can be used as evidence during road mishaps.
Aside from dashcams, the new jeepney will also feature CCTVs as added security to passengers.
The modern PUVs have bigger and comfortable seats for the convenience of the commuters. A modern jeepney can seat 22 to 30 people, an almost doubled capacity from the current jeepneys which can only accommodate 16 to 18 passengers.
Some seats of the prototype designs looks similar to the design of the Metro Rail Train 3.
Automatic fare system
The new jeepneys will advent an automatic fare system where passengers only need to tap in/out an electronic card when embarking/disembarking to/from the vehicle.
The modern vehicles will feature a cleaner emission system and is Euro 4 Emission compliant. It follows the global standards on the limit on the emission of pollutants.
Some of the vehicles have low ramps for persons with disabilities (PWDs). These ramps are measured to land on the curb of the sidewalk for the convenience of people with wheelchairs.
Commuters will enjoy a free WiFi connection while onboard the new vehicles.
The modern PUV will also feature GPS to further assist drivers in their route.
