Manila, Philippines – The low pressure area (LPA) spotted west of Ilocos Sur has developed into a tropical depression, according to PAGASA.
PAGASA names the new weather disturbance “Josie”. At 10 AM today, the center of Josie was estimated at 195 km west northwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur. It packs a maximum sustained winds of up to 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60kph. Josie is slowly moving northeast and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday.
Tropical cyclone warning signal no. 1 is raised over Batanes Northern Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands Ilocos Norte Northern portion of Ilocos Sur Apayao Northern portion of Abra. Sea travel is risky in these areas under TCWS 1.
Josie is expected to enhance southwest monsoon or hanging habagat. Scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Zambales, Tarlac and Nueva Ecija. Residents along these areas are advised to take precautionary measures against possible flooding and landslides especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.
Metro Manila, CALABARZON and rest of Central Luzon will experience scattered light to moderate with occasional heavy rains.
Josie is forecast to exit PAR on Tuesday morning.
