Jakarta, Indonesia – Hidilyn Diaz has brought honor to the Philippines once again after winning the elusive gold medal for the Philippines in the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Diaz won the gold medal for the Philippines in the women’s 53-kilograms event in the 2018 Asian Games weightlifting competition on Tuesday, August 21, held at the Jakarta International Expo Hall A in Indonesia.
The 27-year-old Zamboangeña made history for the Philippines after nabbing a silver medal in the women’s 53-kg weightlifting division during the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Brazil. It ended the country’s 20-year Olympic medal drought.
Another Filipino athlete also added one bronze medal to Philippines’ record. Pauline Lopez won the 4th bronze to the country in taekwondo.
Meanwhile, Gilas Pilipinas fell short to China with an 80-82 score. The women’s volleyball team also suffered its second loss in the competition after a 3-0 sweep from their Japanese opponents.
After successes in today’s events, the Philippines improves its standing from 16 to 14 with 5 medals (1 gold and 4 bronze).
