Jakarta, Indonesia – The Philippine national basketball team triumphs over Japan in a wide-lead victory of 113-80 in the 2018 Asian Games basketball tournament on Tuesday, August 28, 2018.
Despite their heartbreaking loss over South Korea and failure to secure a spot quarterfinals, there was no slowing down for Gilas Pilipinas. The team defeated Japan with 113 -80 in the classification for 5th to 8th place in the tournament.
It was a first Gilas win for Jordan Clarkson. He scored 22 points, with 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Christian Standhardinger led the Philippines with 27 points, with 13 rebounds and 3 steals.
Philippines 113 – Standhardinger 27, Clarkson 22, Lee 17, Pringle 9, Belga 7, Almazan 6, Taulava 6, Ahanmisi 5, Tiu 5, Erram 4.
Japan played with only 8 players following a controversial revocation of the accreditation of its four players. They were found out to have spent the night with prostitutes in the red light district in Jakarta, prompting the Japanese Olympic Committee to disqualify them from playing and send them back to Japan.
Gilas will play for the 5th place and will face the winner of the Syria vs Indonesia game on August 31.
