Manila, Philippines – More areas have been placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 as Typhoon Ompong draws near.
According to PAGASA, the eye of Typhoon Ompong was located based on all available data at 560 km Northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar as of 4:00 PM. The tropical cyclone slightly slowed as it moves West Northwest at 25 kilometer per hour.
TY Ompong maintains its strength as it continues to threaten Northern Luzon. It carries a maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph.
More than 30 areas and provinces were placed under Signal No. 1, which will experience occassional rains and gusty winds in the next 36 hours:
- Cagayan including Babuyan group of Islands
- Mountain Province
- La Union
- Ilocos Norte
- Ilocos Sur
- Nueva Vizcaya
- Nueva Ecija
- Metro Manila
- Quezon incl. Polillo Island
- Northern Occidental Mindoro incl. Lubang Is.
- Northern Oriental Mindoro
- Camarines Norte
- Camarines Sur
- Burias and Ticao island.
- Northern Samar
Frontline government agencies for disaster risk reduction, health, public safety, social works, etc., are alerted to prepare for the possible devastation of TY Ompong.
Meanwhile. more local government units have already cancelled classes and work for tomorrow as precautionary measures for the onslaught of the typhoon. The automatic suspension of classes formulated by the Department of Education (DepEd) shall take place in places with no class suspension announcement but placed under storm signal.
